For my first post, I thought it’d be kind of fun to tell you some fun facts about cupcakes, and how these fluffy, sweet treats came to be in the first place! Hope you have fun reading, and keep your eyes peeled for my next post: a holiday inspired cupcake recipe with pictures!
Cupcake Beginnings

• Cupcakes were first made way back in the 1800’s as a treat to eat with tea by the ladies of the house.
• The name “cupcake” came about for two reasons:
- The first cupcakes really were “cup cakes” – small cakes made in tea cups or patty pans, (molds similar to ones you would use for tarts), over the burning embers of a fireplace. Women started using cups to cook their cake in rather than a large clay pot because they not only cooked faster, but they were far less likely to burn when baking.
- The name cupcake also came from the way women measured the ingredients for the cakes when making them. They used tea cups to measure out ingredients instead ofweighing everything because it was much faster and easier.
A Few Fun Facts
• The first written cupcake recipe was published by Miss. Leslie’s in her cookbook seventy-five recipes for pastry, cakes and sweetmeats in 1832!
• In 1919, hostess launched its first snack cake called “The Cupcake”; a small packaged snacking cake without icing or filling. 3.
• Cupcakes didn’t have icing until 1920!
• The world record for largest number of cupcakes eaten in the shortest amount of time, by one person, is 29 cupcakes in 30 seconds! That’s a lot of cupcakes at one go!!
• The world’s largest cupcake was made by GourmetGiftBasket.com in August 2009 for a fundraiser run by Passionately Pink for the Cure.
The cupcake weighed in at a honking 1224 lbs, totalled a shocking 2 million calories, and took 800 eggs to make!! 4.

What a beautiful website.
ReplyDeleteOnce a cupcake is 1224lbs, does it still fit into a cup?
Wow, really cool facts about cupcakes!! Amazing how some people can gulp down food like its water. 29 cupcakes in 30 seconds is very impressive, I can't imagine doing that!

Hi Alyssa,
ReplyDeleteThe designs of your webpage really give me the feeling that I've entered into a specialty cupcake store!
I was wondering if you know how long it took to bake the 1224lb cupcake? It would've been interesting trying to make sure the cupcake didn't rise and overflow during baking!
Hi guys! Okay so I have been trying to figure out how to reply to each comment individually on here, but apparently you actually can't do that! So I apologize for the late reply!
ReplyDeleteHqchen - Yea, I couldn't believe that someone at that many cupcakes in 30 seconds either! The person pretty much would have to swallow them whole! I wonder though if they were regular sized cupcakes, or mini ones? That would make a difference!
